This week’s Red Light Radio playlist comes from that evil mastermind, Ryan, our visuals manager. Red Light Radio #3 is a mix of Ryan’s semi-obscure favorites…the songs customers always ask us about! Cazwell, Ssion, Leslie Hall (who you might spot shopping at The Red Light when she’s in town), ELO and more all make it onto this week’s Radio. Check it out here, on The Red Light’s Grooveshark channel (where you can find a host of playlists curated by Red Light staff)!
Red Light Radio #3 Up Now!
250 Years of Environmentally-Friendly Fashion
Right now we’re wishing r/t tickets to NYC weren’t so expensive in the summer because we’d love to jump on a Jet Blue flight to New York for FIT’s current exhibit, “Eco Fashion: Going Green.”
Don’t be dissuaded by the title; this show is truly investigative, not just spouting more environmentally-friendly fashion b.s.
“Eco Fashion” at FIT surveys environmental issues in fashion over the past 250 years, finding trends good, bad and just weird (a dress dyed with arsenic, see pic above, courtesy of Fashion Institute of Technology. Admittedly, the color is fabulous!). The show touches upon manufacturing, labor, animal rights and farming, among other current hot-button political topics, while showcasing an impressive array of style, from Balenciaga and Halston to no-name mid-19th century “shirt waist” manufacturers (the early predecessors of fast-fashion chains like H&M and Forever 21).
This LA Times review makes the exhibit sound like an incredible trove of fashion trivia, while photos on the FIT exhibit page suggest that this show doesn’t skimp on style while pondering sustainability.
We’re not sure what the curators’ conclusion is – it’s already well-documented that the fashion industry is terribly polluting, unfortunately, and that the only truly environmentally-friendly style is vintage – but it’s rad to see a more inquisitive approach to the history of this complex industry.
Here’s to hoping this turns into a traveling exhibit destined for Portland!
Red Light Radio #1 Up Today!
Since so many customers ask us what music we’re playing in the store, we decided to start Red Light Radio – bi-monthly playlists that feature what we’re listening to now! Listen to our first playlist now (designed to help you cut a rug anytime), and check back here or on www.facebook.com/redlightpdx for new playlists every other Friday.
Got a favorite song you heard at The Red Light? Holler and we’ll do our best to include it on the next installment of Red Light Radio!
Creepy Cakes by Scott Hove
A friend tipped us off to this crazy, cool cake art by Scott Hove. Apparently it’s inedible, which is a shame because wouldn’t one of these be the most amazing birthday or wedding cake ever?!? We’ve always been fans of the grotesquely bright icing’d cakes found at grocery stores and Mr. Hove’s masterpieces feel like the refined, elegant version of those sugar bomb atrocities.
These pieces and more by Scott Hove will be on view at the La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles for most of April…No word, unfortunately, on when they will be making a Portland appearance.
Portland Urban Iditarod Today!
Lots fun happening around Portland today! Along with the sun, today brings Portland’s Urban Iditarod…It involves running and drinking and dressing in crazy costumes. Beyond that, we’re a little vague. You can find out more on thevent’s Wikipedia pagee . The race starts at 11:30 am under the east end of the Hawthorne bridge.
Of course, if you’d rather get some fly gear for yourself than watch other people play dress up, we’ve got hundreds of new goodies for you to peruse. Seriously, our buying counter has been BUSY lately – which means tons of new, awesome items on the racks!
Naked Shopping Spree in The Oregonian!
Portland’s paper of note, The Oregonian, is showing us some love this weekend with an awesome feature all about our Naked Shopping Spree (which took place last Sunday). Along with a great article by Peter Ames Carlin, the feature includes lots of action photos – and if you check things out online, a video of the event itself!
Once again, thank you to all who came out to watch the Naked Shopping Spree and especially our four awesome contestants!
Also, big thanks to Peter, Motoya and Brent at The Oregonian for their excellent coverage and celebrating local business!

Naked Shopping Spree!

Thanks to all who came out for our Annual, Co-ed Naked Shopping Spree on Sunday – especially Felesha, Breanna, Janelle, and Rich, our awesome competitors!
The event was tons of fun and a huge success! For the first time ever, one of the male contestants chickened out so the competition was between 1 guy and 3 girls (instead of 2 and 2)…Female alternate Felesha jumped in to fill the vacant spot at the last minute and did an outstanding job.
Another first: this year’s lone male contestant, Rich, is also the only 2-time Naked Shopping Spree competitor! He ran in the 2008 Naked Shopping Spree and won this year…Guess he picked up a few tricks and tactics from his previous experience? Rich is now the official ambassador for The Red Light’s Naked Shopping Spree event; his name has been randomly chosen twice to compete from nearly 500 entrants. How can you not believe in destiny?
Also, Janelle, our second place finisher this year has the distinct honor of putting on more clothes than any other woman in the history of this contest! In just 3 minutes, she put on 18 items – just shy of winner Rich’s 20 items.
Along with the many, many onlookers were multiple Portland media outlets. Seems our Naked Shopping Spree was the news story of Sunday, Feb. 21 (a nice change from police shootings). On hand covering the event were crews from KATU, FOX 12, The Oregonian and PDX.FM.
We had a great time and hope you did too! The 2010 Annual, Co-ed Naked Shopping Spree raised the stakes for next year…We’re already planning how to top it!
(P.S. More photos from the event can be seen on our Facebook page!)
Who Loves Johnny Thunders?
Who loves Johnny Thunders? We do! But we were beyond surprised to read Simon Doonan, famed Barney’s window dresser, singing JT’s praises in The Daily Beast.
Mr. Doonan basically writes that what the world needs now is a little Johnny Thunders; the New York Dolls guitarist had serious cool and serious personal style, not to mention great talent. How could you not be inspired by just that hair?
