Denim Industry Destorying China’s Pearl River

hk_haze2

This article on CCN.com details how the denim industry is ruining China’s famous Pearl River, for centuries a center of the Chinese economy. Denim factories are dumping waste chemicals, particularly dye, straight into the river. Denim scraps along with miscellanious trash line the riverbanks. Gross and scary stuff…And all the more reason to make vintage a regular part of your wardrobe!

Buying and selling your clothes at stores like The Red Light is one of the easiest ways to stop pollution – at home and around the world.

Lights! Camera! Action!

February is shaping up to be quite an exciting month at The Red Light! Not only do we host our annual Co-Ed Naked Shopping Spree on Feb. 21, but we’ll also be updating our in-store lighting over the coming weeks! Woo hoo! While we’re improving our lighting, we’re also sticking to our reuse/repurpose roots – we got our paws on a bunch of groovy old fixtures, and of course we’ll be using environmentally friendly, energy smart bulbs.

Best of all, more light = easier to spot that perfect vintage find!

H&M, Wal-Mart Slash & Trash Unsold Clothes

According to this recent New York Times article, major retailers H&M and Wal-Mart both slash and trash unsold goods – making them unwearable and fodder for landfills – rather than simply donating or otherwise responsibly disposing of unwanted inventory.

The fashion industry is one of the world’s major polluters just through it’s manufacturing process. It is extremely disheartening to learn that major retailers are compounding this waste by simply throwing out their leftovers.

Patronizing The Red Light and similar stores, whether as a buyer or a seller (we hope you’re both!), is one of the best ways to reduce fashion industry waste. The Red Light doesn’t throw out any clothing; everything we can’t use is donated to a local charity.

Cool Things To Do With Old Jewelry

Just saw this amazing vintage brooch bouquet made by Lisa Martin of local floral shop Studio del Fiore:

According to PDXNeatSheet, the bouquet is the result of months of old jewelry collection by Martin. She’ll do custom jewelry bouquets, too, but they’ll set you back about $500!

We’re not ready to part with that kind of dough, but we are totally inspired by this beautiful reuse project. It’s a genius way to recycle broken brooches, single earrings and other vintage jewelry gems!
