Special Holiday Sale: Local Designer Made in China 10% Off Today!

Today is the Hawthorne Blvd. Holiday Stroll – a special night of shopping on our street! Businesses are staying open late (Red Light will be open until 9 pm), offering a bunch of special deals, plus there will be carolers and free hot cider and cocoa!

Along with the extended hours, Red Light is offering a very special discount on our wildly popular dresses, skirts, jackets and blouses designed by local label Made in China: 10% off today only! Made in China is a pioneer in reworking vintage clothing into totally new designs…her pieces are girly with an edge, a little bit Victorian, a little bit punk.

Today’s Holiday Stroll is a great opportunity to support local businesses AND score a great deal on one-of-a-kind party frock…plus, who knows what other treasures and deals you’ll uncover once you’re here?!

Red Light Redux: Mick Jagger

Photo: Max Vadukul for The New York Times

Over the weekend, the usually swell New York Times ran a nice little piece about the always swank Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones and sharp-dressed man for at least the last four decades. The photo above accompanied the article. Total cost for his NY Times ensemble: $2,338 (plus unknown thousands for the antique brooch, price available upon request, from Fred Leighton). Sir Mick’s outfit breaks down thusly:

- Junya Watanabe Man Comme de Garcons jacket, $1,440
- Marc by Marc Jacobs shirt, $188
- Lanvin scarf, $710

Well, guess what? You can recreate Mick’s dapper, rock ‘n’ roll look for a helluva lot less at Red Light. It took us about 10 minutes to put together this outfit with pieces we found on our racks:

Photo: Jodi Bates for Red Light

- vintage velvet blazer, $14
- vintage shirt, $10
- tie-dye scarf, $9.95
- vintage brooch, $6

Total cost for Red Light’s Mick Jagger style redux: $39.95 That’s a difference of $2,298.05 (and that’s not even including the cost of Mick’s brooch!).

(Thanks for being our impromptu Mick, Jen!)

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES!

It’s quite possibly our favorite time of the year at The Red Light: Halloween! This is when creativity runs wild and all sorts of amazing gems come out of our vault!

The Red Light is Portland’s largest independent costume store for the month of October, filled with incredible clothes from all decades as well as vintage theatrical costumes, contemporary costumes, hats, wigs, wings, jewelry and anything else you need to create an outrageous Halloween costume.

Right now we have more than 50 wig styles, 10 colors of boas, and 10 types of crinolines, as well as a bunch of false eyelashes, fake mustaches, toy weapons, face paint, hair dye…

And all those accessories are just the tip of the iceberg! We have racks of clothing from ’20s-’90s along with a huge selection of sequined garments, dress suits, overalls, circus apparel, and more. No store in Portland has a bigger selection of flapper dresses, polyester shirts, ’80s jams (surf pants), or western attire. Oh – we also have an entire rack of Lady Gaga gear!

Check us out on Facebook (Red Light PDX) for daily costume pics or, better yet, drop in the store and start getting inspired. Halloween will be here before you know it!

Who Loves Johnny Thunders?

johnny_thunders3

Who loves Johnny Thunders? We do! But we were beyond surprised to read Simon Doonan, famed Barney’s window dresser, singing JT’s praises in The Daily Beast.

Mr. Doonan basically writes that what the world needs now is a little Johnny Thunders; the New York Dolls guitarist had serious cool and serious personal style, not to mention great talent. How could you not be inspired by just that hair?

Hair Metal for Christmas?

Dudes! We just got in a bunch of copies of Hollywood Rocks! - a big, beautiful, picture book all about Hollywood and hair bands in the ’80s. Bands featured include those you know (Motley, Poison) and those you probably don’t (Leatherwolf, Glamour Punks) plus pics of the hair studios, clothing shops and other haunts favored by hair metal rockers. This book is seriously metal nirvana.

Hollywood Rocks! is sure to please any rocker you know, as well as any fashion junkie (so much spandex!)…And who wouldn’t want a book with Axl Rose on the cover anyway? Give hair metal for Christmas!
