Bye-Bye J.D. Salinger

Great American author J.D. Salinger passed away today at age 91. Salinger is best known for his classic novel, The Catcher in The Rye. After a brief time in the spotlight during the ’50s, Salinger retreated to a private compound in New Hampshire, where he lived as a recluse until his passing. His last published writing was in 1965, but his books have remained best-sellers for decades.
If you haven’t read Catcher already, today offers a perfect occasion to hop on over to Powell’s (shop local!) and buy a copy…We promise you’ll be glad you did!

Do You Like/Love Vintage Blacklight Posters?

Along with being crazy about vintage clothes, if you’ve ever been in The Red Light you might have noticed that we also have a thing for vintage velvet paintings and blacklight posters. Judging by how many people ask us everyday if our posters or paintings are for sale, we’re betting that a number of our customers share our fondness for tacky pop art.
If you’re one of them, then check out this book: Ultraviolet by Dan Donahue, with an introduction by MGMT. The book features 69 premium vintage blacklight posters reproduced in full color with light sensitive inks so they glow under blacklight just like the originals!

Turns out this tome came out in October ’08! We’re shocked we didn’t hear about it sooner (especially since the publisher, Abrams Image, also produced our book on vintage rock T-shirts, Rock Tease), but what can you do?
Just put on “Electric Feel”, open the book and enjoy the psychedelic explosion!

Last Minute Gift Ideas!
Most of us have at least a few Christmas gifts left to buy. Here’s a few fun suggestions from The Red Light staff – and it’s all stuff that you can grab here on Hawthorne!:
1. Just the thing for the shop local, buy local PDX junkie!
Pair some PORTLAND socks ($9.95) from Red Light with a Powell’s gift card or Stumptown coffee. Alternatively, if you’re PDX-centric friend is also a boozehound, give him or her a pair of WHISKEY socks with a bottle of House Spirits recently released, limited edition whiskey!
2. Something sure to please any rock ‘n’ roller…
Gift a great vintage rock tee (we’ve got a bunch, starting from $20) with some classic albums or a gift card from Jackpot Records. Easy, right?!
3. Make any glamhead happy:
Hook up your make-up happy, retro-loving friend with a deadstock, hard cover bio of Boy George ($10; we’ve got several left) or Hollywood Rocks! ($20) from The Red Light and wrap it up with a host of bright nail polish or eyeliner colors from Wet ‘n’ Wild (available at Fred Meyer). Or give either book with a gift certificate for a rock ‘n’ roll hair make-over at Bishop’s.
There are only 3 more days ’til Christmas, but there are still lots of goodies at The Red Light and all along Hawthorne!
(And, of course, you can always just give a Red Light gift certificate. They’re available in any denomination and never expire…)
