Top 5 Ugly Christmas Sweater Themes

Thanks in part to that ubiquitous Oregon Lottery ad, the Ugly Christmas Sweater season started early. We’ve had people calling Red Light about ugly Christmas sweaters since early November!

Fortunately, we’ve been buying them all year…we have hundreds saved up, and they’re all totally tacky.

But we don’t just buy every Christmas sweater that is offered to us, then turn around and call it an ugly Christmas Sweater. Each ugly Christmas sweater we have for sale was hand-picked for awfulness. Our staff takes tacky seriously, so we’re picking the creme de la creme of holiday-themed knitwear horrors. Here are some of the things we are look for:

1. Inappropriately dressed Santas.

Santa should be jolly and joyful. He may even sometimes come across as creepy. But he is never rock ‘n’ roll. Thus, Santa should never wear leopard or zebra-print. When you find a sweater with an inappropriately “edgy” Santa (or snowman or penguin for that matter), you’ve found a keeper.

2. Disjointed holiday iconography.

When a sweater is blocked off into various scenes and the only continuous theme is Christmas, it can transcend into ugly Christmas sweater territory. The colors are bright, the images many and the overall effect is a bit like looking at a strobe light. You get dizzy, disoriented…and it’s even worse if the sweater has sparkles!

3. Sewn-on accoutrements that jingle, wiggle or light up.

Sweaters that have bells, bobbles or anything that moves, makes noise or lights up sewn onto them are highly desirable. These kinds of “add ons” take a nice, holiday cardigan to the next level – they announce your presence and let everyone know that you are ready to party! In short, they instantly create a sweater that cannot be ignored (which is the whole point of the Ugly Christmas Sweater).

4. Scary animals.

Some of the best ugly Christmas sweaters feature creepy, human-like animals, most often penguins, bears or kitties. Animals acting like deliriously happy ice-skaters are always unsettling, and if the animals on your sweater also happen to be vaguely menacing or slightly misshapen, well…bonus points!

5. Psychedelic patterns.

Think bad acid trip. If your sweater can loosely be described as “busy,” there’s a good chance you have a true Ugly Christmas Sweater. Knitwear with vaguely Nordic patterns, overcome with Christmas iconography rendered in bright primary colors is quickly overwhelming. It’s hard to go wrong with sweaters like these, especially when they include over-simplified, blob-like Santa faces.

6. Unintentionally perverted.

Though the unintentionally perverted subcategory of Ugly Christmas Sweaters is not as prevalent as some of the others we’ve mentioned, it’s no less tacky. Reindeer dancing a little too close, wreathes awkwardly placed…suggestive holiday sweaters are just not right.

7. Messages to Santa (or other mall shoppers).

The diary-like quality of sweaters and sweatshirts emblazoned with messages to Santa, or sweeties, or just other mall shoppers make this category an instant classic. (Of course, the message must be holiday-themed but trust us, there really are tons of these Dear Santa-type sweatshirts.) Nothing says “Happy Holidays!” like asking for gifts via a disgruntled message Velvasheened across your chest!

In the spirit of holiday giving, we’ve listed 7 Christmas sweater horrors rather than just the 5 promised in our post title – tra la! The truth is, there are lots of ways holiday sweaters can qualify as Ugly Christmas Sweaters…And in our next post, we’ll tell you how you can spruce up your Ugly Christmas Sweater and take it to new heights of tackiness with a little DIY magic!

Ugly Christmas Sweaters Are Here!

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but we listen to our customers and so…we’ve begun to put out our stash of ugly Christmas sweaters!

Red Light has hundreds of fantastically horrid holiday sweaters saved up for you, each one hand-picked for extreme tackiness. No store in Portland has a bigger or better selection of ugly Christmas sweaters.

Some of the graphic themes you’ll find in our holiday sweater selection: teddy bears, sequins, dancing reindeer, leopard print santas, kittens in gift boxes.

And we also have ugly sweaters in a complete spectrum of sizes…from petite to XXL, as well as turtlenecks, cardigans and sweater vests.

Plus, later this week we’ll share our thoughts on what makes an ugly Christmas sweater truly party worthy and DIY tips to take your hideous holiday sweater over the top!

Make Your Halloween Hair-do Perfect: Tips for Wearing Wigs

Red Light has a lot of wigs, especially during Halloween. Customers love looking at them, but not everyone is sure about how to incorporate a wig into their costume…Is the jumbo afro going to stay in place? Can wigs be brushed? Will the wig fit over naturally long hair?

For the wig curious, Red Light manager and wig-wearer extraordinaire, Jodi, shares a few simple tips:

1. Hiding your hair: If your hair is chin length or longer, a good way to hide it under your wig is by creating small sections of hair, twisting that hair into tiny flat buns against your scalp and using bobby pins to hold them down. Once you have pinned all of your hair down, use a little bit of hair spray to give it some extra hold. After your wig is in place, try using 2 bobby pins near your temple to pin the wig to your own hair and help it stay in place all night long.

2. Keep it neat: When putting on a wig, you should never flip it upside down. Instead, keep it level and glide it over your head, start at the front and then bring it into position in the back of your head. This will keep it from knotting and getting gnarly. When combing through your wig, it’s best to use a thick tooth comb or a hair pick. (Using a brush tends to rip hairs out of the wig and create more knots). Try not to comb through curls, instead use your fingers to style any fly aways back into the curl pattern. Once the wig is on your head and in position, trim any part needed (ie; if there are long hairs getting in your bang fringe etc)

3. That looks so real: One of the best ways to finish a look is with accessories; a wig loves accessories. A trick to making that wig look like your real hair is to accompany it with a hair band, a hair clip or a hat. These accessories add the perfect finishing touch to your look and creates more of an illusion that the hair on your head is part of your own.

Halloween Costume Countdown!

It’s our favorite time of the year! October is here and Halloween is almost in full swing at Red Light…We say almost because, as you might know, we perform a big “flip” this month. Very soon Red Light will transform from your favorite neighborhood vintage store into your favorite Halloween superstore.

Sure, we’ve been putting out some of our costume finery everyday. And if you were in Red Light today you noticed that all those special, necessary accessories like face paint and fangs and mustaches are filling our cases now, too. But we have SO MUCH MORE yet to put out – including possibly the best set of costumes we’ve ever seen!

Not too many things are so weird, so extreme and so rare that the entire Red Light staff is in awe of them, but that is the case with this costume group. And we’ll be revealing those get-ups to the world on Friday – don’t miss out!

$1 Sale for Caldera Was MAJOR Success!

WOW – last Sunday’s $1 Sale was crazy! Thank you to everyone who came out and shopped for a cause!

Not only was it our most successful $1 Sale yet this summer, the event also featured our youngest-ever $1 Sale shopper (the cutie pictured above took home a vintage beaded purse).

And, as if that weren’t enough, this $1 Sale also had the biggest single customer purchase ever: 70 items! Yep, one of your fellow Portlanders found 70 great garments…and their purchase translated into $70 cash to Caldera.

As with all of our summer $1 Sales, 100% of proceeds from the event are going to a local non-profit. Sunday’s $1 Sale benefited Caldera – an exceptional organization that supports the arts on many levels, including artist-in-residence programs and extensive outreach to struggling schools and students.

We have one $1 Sale left on the 2011 Summer calendar: Sunday, August 24 from 10 am – noon. The last $1 Sale of the summer will benefit Dove Lewis, an amazing emergency veterinary center, so get ready to shop!

$1 Sale This Sunday, 7/24 Benefits St. Francis Dining Hall

It’s that time again…This Sunday, July 24, from 10 am – noon we’ll be having a $1 Sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to St. Francis Dining Hall!

St. Francis Dining Hall operates here in SE Portland, providing 300+ meals daily to those in need. The Dining Hall is run by a staff of three people assisted by numerous volunteers and operates year round.

We’ve got tons of great stuff ready for this weekend’s $1 Sale so be sure to hit Hawthorne early with some cash in hand (sale is CASH ONLY) to get the best stuff!

Forecast for Sunday is beautiful and sunny – summer’s finally here!

Bye Bye Maytags

It’s the end of an era – today we retired the circa 1960 Maytag washer and dryer that have been a part of Red Light for over a decade. We’ve used these appliances everyday for ten years, thousands of loads of laundry…make that tens of thousands!

They worked great and looked even better…Heck, this aqua dryer looks better than 99% of cars these days:

But, unfortunately, our trusty vintage dryer finally conked out on us a few months ago.

We spent hours online looking for the replacement part to repair it with no luck. So, we finally decided it was time to replace our beloved Maytags…And now we have a lovely, modern, Eco-star approved washer/dryer set. The new machines use a lot less water and energy than our vintage set, and that’s a good thing. But they just aren’t as pretty! Doing the laundry just won’t be as much fun as it used to be.

Raising Money and Awareness With Used Clothes

Today we hosted our third Shop Local, Support Local $1 Sale; the event benefited Northwest Down Syndrome Association (www.nwdsa.org).

From 10 am – noon, hundreds of items were just a buck and 100% of the Sale’s proceeds are going to NWDSA.

Tons of people stopped by, several shoppers found 20+ items they couldn’t live without…And all those purchases added up to our most successful $1 Sale yet! Thank you to everyone who shopped and supported!

This little girl was adorable, trying on a bunch of different dresses and spinning around on the sidewalk to see which had the best swirl:

We have three more Shop Local, Support Local $1 Sales planned for the summer. The next Sale takes place on Sunday, July 24!

$1 Sale Benefiting Northwest Down Syndrome Association This Sunday!

This Sunday, July 10, from 10am until noon Red Light will be having a $1 Sale benefiting Northwest Down Syndrome Association! Hundreds of men’s and women’s vintage and name brand items and everything’s just a buck…with 100% of the proceeds going to NWDSA (www.nwdsa.org).

The $1 Sale will be on our sidewalk, at 36th and Hawthorne. It’s cash only, so please come prepared.

Northwest Downs Syndrome Association works to empower and support families and individuals who have been touched by Down syndrome. NWDSA provides opportunities for social and family support, education, and information for families touched by Down syndrome and their wider community.

This Sunday is the third event in our summer series of Shop Local, Support Local $1 Sales. 100% of proceeds from each $1 Sale in the series goes to a different Portland-area non-profit. Past recipients are Basic Rights Oregon and Cat Adoption Team.

Cat Adoption Team $1 Sale Was A Big Success!

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday and made our $1 Sale benefiting Cat Adoption Team (www.catadoptionteam.org) a big success! The beautiful, sunny morning made it all the more fun and we’re happy to be taking a wad of cash over to CAT later today.

100% of the proceeds from this sale are being given to the non-profit Cat Adoption Team. CAT is based in Portland and is the Northwest’s largest no-kill kitty shelter. Cat Adoption Team provides a lot of great services for area pet-owners, on top of operating their shelter – please check them out if you are looking for a new four-legged friend!

And if you missed yesterday’s $1 Sale, don’t worry…We’re hosting $1 Sales all summer long! Each Red Light $1 Sale benefits a different local non-profit that is important to Red Light staff and customers.

These “Shop Local, Support Local” $1 Sales are scheduled for the second and fourth Sunday of every month, June – August.

Our next $1 Sale will be on Sunday, July 10.
