Ugly Christmas Sweaters Are Here!

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but we listen to our customers and so…we’ve begun to put out our stash of ugly Christmas sweaters!
Red Light has hundreds of fantastically horrid holiday sweaters saved up for you, each one hand-picked for extreme tackiness. No store in Portland has a bigger or better selection of ugly Christmas sweaters.
Some of the graphic themes you’ll find in our holiday sweater selection: teddy bears, sequins, dancing reindeer, leopard print santas, kittens in gift boxes.
And we also have ugly sweaters in a complete spectrum of sizes…from petite to XXL, as well as turtlenecks, cardigans and sweater vests.
Plus, later this week we’ll share our thoughts on what makes an ugly Christmas sweater truly party worthy and DIY tips to take your hideous holiday sweater over the top!

Made in Portland?

Photo: Harold Kellogg, Getty Images
This article in Neighborhood Notes has nothing to do with vintage fashion, but it’s pretty interesting nonetheless. Anna Reed interviews Portland-based designers about their struggles to produce garments wholly made in PDX. Folly, Jet and Portland Garment Factory all way in on what it takes to be Made in Portland.
At Red Light, we see design teams from across the country find inspiration in vintage – locally-based, independent fashion designers to corporate design teams (such as Forever 21) scout our racks
regularly – but we’ve never given much thought to the rest of the garment creation process. Not surprisingly, it’s pretty complex.
So, what do you think? Is Made in Portland worthy cause, or is Made in the U.S.A. good enough for you?

Red Light Redux: Mick Jagger

Over the weekend, the usually swell New York Times ran a nice little piece about the always swank Mick Jagger, lead singer of the Rolling Stones and sharp-dressed man for at least the last four decades. The photo above accompanied the article. Total cost for his NY Times ensemble: $2,338 (plus unknown thousands for the antique brooch, price available upon request, from Fred Leighton). Sir Mick’s outfit breaks down thusly:
- Junya Watanabe Man Comme de Garcons jacket, $1,440
- Marc by Marc Jacobs shirt, $188
- Lanvin scarf, $710
Well, guess what? You can recreate Mick’s dapper, rock ‘n’ roll look for a helluva lot less at Red Light. It took us about 10 minutes to put together this outfit with pieces we found on our racks:

- vintage velvet blazer, $14
- vintage shirt, $10
- tie-dye scarf, $9.95
- vintage brooch, $6
Total cost for Red Light’s Mick Jagger style redux: $39.95 That’s a difference of $2,298.05 (and that’s not even including the cost of Mick’s brooch!).
(Thanks for being our impromptu Mick, Jen!)

Grow A Rainbow Rose! For real!

We discovered this rad little link with information about rainbow roses (pictured above) via Pee Wee Herman – he knows about everything! Anyway, we thought these flowers were so cute; who wouldn’t love to be given a psychedelic rainbow rose? Click the link for instructions about how to “grow” them yourself…it doesn’t sound too hard.

Check it out here, on The Red Light’s Grooveshark channel (where you can find a host of playlists curated by Red Light staff)!

May 30th Officially Ronnie James Dio Day

Metal master Ronnie James Dio passed away last month from stomach cancer, but he’s already been given a pretty rad memorial: the city (OK, not Portland, but Los Angeles – although who’s to say it won’t happen here too?) has officially declared May 30 Ronnie James Dio Day.
Hearing this got us thinking…Why Dio? Certainly there are many famous, dead rock stars who are equally worthy of such civic recognition? And, on that note, what other famous, dead rock stars already have their own “Day” in cities around the world?
Does PDX have any dead rocker “Days” we don’t know about?

Local Artists Tackle The Red Light…

Google tipped us off to this cool blog for a group of local artists that gather at random locations around Portland for impromptu sketching sessions…one of which recently occured across the street from us! Check out more Red Light-related pieces from this talented collective here.

Creepy Cakes by Scott Hove

A friend tipped us off to this crazy, cool cake art by Scott Hove. Apparently it’s inedible, which is a shame because wouldn’t one of these be the most amazing birthday or wedding cake ever?!? We’ve always been fans of the grotesquely bright icing’d cakes found at grocery stores and Mr. Hove’s masterpieces feel like the refined, elegant version of those sugar bomb atrocities.
These pieces and more by Scott Hove will be on view at the La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles for most of April…No word, unfortunately, on when they will be making a Portland appearance.
