Red Light Radio #3 Up Now!

bbox1

This week’s Red Light Radio playlist comes from that evil mastermind, Ryan, our visuals manager. Red Light Radio #3 is a mix of Ryan’s semi-obscure favorites…the songs customers always ask us about! Cazwell, Ssion, Leslie Hall (who you might spot shopping at The Red Light when she’s in town), ELO and more all make it onto this week’s Radio. Check it out here, on The Red Light’s Grooveshark channel (where you can find a host of playlists curated by Red Light staff)!

Red Light Radio #1 Up Today!

Since so many customers ask us what music we’re playing in the store, we decided to start Red Light Radio – bi-monthly playlists that feature what we’re listening to now! Listen to our first playlist now (designed to help you cut a rug anytime), and check back here or on www.facebook.com/redlightpdx for new playlists every other Friday.

Got a favorite song you heard at The Red Light? Holler and we’ll do our best to include it on the next installment of Red Light Radio!

May 30th Officially Ronnie James Dio Day

ronnie_james_dio_sp

Metal master Ronnie James Dio passed away last month from stomach cancer, but he’s already been given a pretty rad memorial: the city (OK, not Portland, but Los Angeles – although who’s to say it won’t happen here too?) has officially declared May 30 Ronnie James Dio Day.

Hearing this got us thinking…Why Dio? Certainly there are many famous, dead rock stars who are equally worthy of such civic recognition? And, on that note, what other famous, dead rock stars already have their own “Day” in cities around the world?

Does PDX have any dead rocker “Days” we don’t know about?

Local Artists Tackle The Red Light…

Google tipped us off to this cool blog for a group of local artists that gather at random locations around Portland for impromptu sketching sessions…one of which recently occured across the street from us! Check out more Red Light-related pieces from this talented collective here.

Creepy Cakes by Scott Hove

hove_LG_babycake

A friend tipped us off to this crazy, cool cake art by Scott Hove. Apparently it’s inedible, which is a shame because wouldn’t one of these be the most amazing birthday or wedding cake ever?!? We’ve always been fans of the grotesquely bright icing’d cakes found at grocery stores and Mr. Hove’s masterpieces feel like the refined, elegant version of those sugar bomb atrocities.

These pieces and more by Scott Hove will be on view at the La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles for most of April…No word, unfortunately, on when they will be making a Portland appearance.

Bye-Bye J.D. Salinger

jd-salinger-0209-lg-27368112
Great American author J.D. Salinger passed away today at age 91. Salinger is best known for his classic novel, The Catcher in The Rye. After a brief time in the spotlight during the ’50s, Salinger retreated to a private compound in New Hampshire, where he lived as a recluse until his passing. His last published writing was in 1965, but his books have remained best-sellers for decades.

If you haven’t read Catcher already, today offers a perfect occasion to hop on over to Powell’s (shop local!) and buy a copy…We promise you’ll be glad you did!

Her bow matches her dress! With the legwarmers too, this outfit feels very Harajuku

Red on red...Very daring, very fun!

Check out her boots!

Do You Like/Love Vintage Blacklight Posters?

1
Along with being crazy about vintage clothes, if you’ve ever been in The Red Light you might have noticed that we also have a thing for vintage velvet paintings and blacklight posters. Judging by how many people ask us everyday if our posters or paintings are for sale, we’re betting that a number of our customers share our fondness for tacky pop art.

If you’re one of them, then check out this book: Ultraviolet by Dan Donahue, with an introduction by MGMT. The book features 69 premium vintage blacklight posters reproduced in full color with light sensitive inks so they glow under blacklight just like the originals!

Turns out this tome came out in October ‘08! We’re shocked we didn’t hear about it sooner (especially since the publisher, Abrams Image, also produced our book on vintage rock T-shirts, Rock Tease), but what can you do?

Just put on “Electric Feel”, open the book and enjoy the psychedelic explosion!
