Frances Bean Cobain Shops at Red Light!

Superstar spawn, Frances Bean Cobain, was at Red Light yesterday! The daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love stocked up on over-sized vintage men’s sweaters.

She probably didn’t realize she was walking in her father’s footsteps – back in the early ’90s Kurt Cobain shopped at one of Red Light’s predecessors, The New Store in Seattle! (Same owner, different shop, different Northwest city.)

The dream of the ’90s really is alive in Portland!

Thanks for stopping by, FBC!

Vintage Doctor’s Bag Love

$1 Sale for Caldera Was MAJOR Success!

WOW – last Sunday’s $1 Sale was crazy! Thank you to everyone who came out and shopped for a cause!

Not only was it our most successful $1 Sale yet this summer, the event also featured our youngest-ever $1 Sale shopper (the cutie pictured above took home a vintage beaded purse).

And, as if that weren’t enough, this $1 Sale also had the biggest single customer purchase ever: 70 items! Yep, one of your fellow Portlanders found 70 great garments…and their purchase translated into $70 cash to Caldera.

As with all of our summer $1 Sales, 100% of proceeds from the event are going to a local non-profit. Sunday’s $1 Sale benefited Caldera – an exceptional organization that supports the arts on many levels, including artist-in-residence programs and extensive outreach to struggling schools and students.

We have one $1 Sale left on the 2011 Summer calendar: Sunday, August 24 from 10 am – noon. The last $1 Sale of the summer will benefit Dove Lewis, an amazing emergency veterinary center, so get ready to shop!

This Sunday, August 14, we’ll be hosting another awesome $1 Sale from 10 am – noon! 100% of the proceeds from this Sale will go to Caldera, a local non-profit that promotes the importance of arts in education. In their own words:

Today, we work year-round with thousands of students, and we invite artists from all over the world for month long residencies at our arts center near Sisters.

Caldera’s mission is to be a catalyst for transformation through innovative art and environmental programs.

Sunday’s $1 Sale will feature hundreds of vintage and name brand items for men and women…There’s lots of good stuff and it’s all just a buck a piece! (CASH ONLY.)

Past $1 Sales have benefited Basic Rights Oregon, Cat Adoption Team, Northwest Down Syndrome Association and St. Francis Dining Hall. All Red Light $1 Sales help keep clothes out of landfills and money in the coffers of great non-profits that directly aid and enrich Portland residents – by shopping local you are supporting your community in so many ways!

“Wear Some Art!”

Look at the rad sidewalk chalk message someone left in front of Red Light today!

This totally made us smile – it’s exactly what Red Light Clothing Exchange is all about: Wear some art and have fun with your clothes!

It’s that time again…This Sunday, July 24, from 10 am – noon we’ll be having a $1 Sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to St. Francis Dining Hall!

St. Francis Dining Hall operates here in SE Portland, providing 300+ meals daily to those in need. The Dining Hall is run by a staff of three people assisted by numerous volunteers and operates year round.

We’ve got tons of great stuff ready for this weekend’s $1 Sale so be sure to hit Hawthorne early with some cash in hand (sale is CASH ONLY) to get the best stuff!

Forecast for Sunday is beautiful and sunny – summer’s finally here!

Raising Money and Awareness With Used Clothes

Today we hosted our third Shop Local, Support Local $1 Sale; the event benefited Northwest Down Syndrome Association (www.nwdsa.org).

From 10 am – noon, hundreds of items were just a buck and 100% of the Sale’s proceeds are going to NWDSA.

Tons of people stopped by, several shoppers found 20+ items they couldn’t live without…And all those purchases added up to our most successful $1 Sale yet! Thank you to everyone who shopped and supported!

This little girl was adorable, trying on a bunch of different dresses and spinning around on the sidewalk to see which had the best swirl:

We have three more Shop Local, Support Local $1 Sales planned for the summer. The next Sale takes place on Sunday, July 24!

$1 Sale Benefiting Northwest Down Syndrome Association This Sunday!

This Sunday, July 10, from 10am until noon Red Light will be having a $1 Sale benefiting Northwest Down Syndrome Association! Hundreds of men’s and women’s vintage and name brand items and everything’s just a buck…with 100% of the proceeds going to NWDSA (www.nwdsa.org).

Northwest Downs Syndrome Association works to empower and support families and individuals who have been touched by Down syndrome. NWDSA provides opportunities for social and family support, education, and information for families touched by Down syndrome and their wider community.

Happy Fourth of July Portland!

It’s the Fourth of July! Red Light will be open today 11am – 6pm, then we’re going to be like you and enjoy hot dogs, beer and other scrumptious stuff before the fireworks.

And while you’re enjoying this fabulous holiday, why not enjoy a drink in honor of the American who wore red, white and blue better than anyone: Evil Knievel! Patriotic jumpsuits never looked better!

KGW Channel 8 Paid Us A Surprise Visit..

Portland’s KGW Channel 8 surprised us by popping in the store yesterday morning…They interviewed Red Light staff and customers for a news segment on second hand stores.

While the KGW crew originally planned to only film at the Goodwill boutique on Hawthorne, they were so intrigued by the crazy, fun looking store across the street (Red Light!) that they had to come over and check us out!

The segment aired on last night’s evening news, but you can watch it here at www.kgw.com.

Thanks for the surprise photo opp, guys!
