KGW Channel 8 Paid Us A Surprise Visit..

Portland’s KGW Channel 8 surprised us by popping in the store yesterday morning…They interviewed Red Light staff and customers for a news segment on second hand stores.

While the KGW crew originally planned to only film at the Goodwill boutique on Hawthorne, they were so intrigued by the crazy, fun looking store across the street (Red Light!) that they had to come over and check us out!

The segment aired on last night’s evening news, but you can watch it here at www.kgw.com.

Thanks for the surprise photo opp, guys!

Cat Adoption Team $1 Sale Was A Big Success!

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday and made our $1 Sale benefiting Cat Adoption Team (www.catadoptionteam.org) a big success! The beautiful, sunny morning made it all the more fun and we’re happy to be taking a wad of cash over to CAT later today.

100% of the proceeds from this sale are being given to the non-profit Cat Adoption Team. CAT is based in Portland and is the Northwest’s largest no-kill kitty shelter. Cat Adoption Team provides a lot of great services for area pet-owners, on top of operating their shelter – please check them out if you are looking for a new four-legged friend!

And if you missed yesterday’s $1 Sale, don’t worry…We’re hosting $1 Sales all summer long! Each Red Light $1 Sale benefits a different local non-profit that is important to Red Light staff and customers.

These “Shop Local, Support Local” $1 Sales are scheduled for the second and fourth Sunday of every month, June – August.

Our next $1 Sale will be on Sunday, July 10.

$1 Sale This Sunday Benefits C.A.T. (Cat Adoption Team)!

Remember how we told you we are having $1 Sales to benefit Portland non-profits all summer? Every second and fourth Sunday of the month, June – August? Well….It’s that time again!

This Sunday, June 26, we’ll have tons and tons of clothes – men’s and women’s, vintage and brand name – all just $1 each! And 100% of the proceeds will go to Portland’s Cat Adoption Team!

C.A.T. is a terrific organization…Along with operating the Northwest’s largest no-kill kitty shelter, C.A.T. provides discounted spay and neuter services, adoption services and they operate an animal food pantry that allows pet owners in financial straights to get free food for their four-legged friends.

So, you can snag some amazing deals AND support one of Portland’s most awesome animal charities right at Red Light this Sunday!

Our $1 Sale runs from 10 am – noon, CASH only. To take advantage of the summer sunshine, the $1 Sale happens on our sidewalk along 36th Ave., across from the Waffle Window.

Made in Portland?

Photo: Harold Kellogg, Getty Images

This article in Neighborhood Notes has nothing to do with vintage fashion, but it’s pretty interesting nonetheless. Anna Reed interviews Portland-based designers about their struggles to produce garments wholly made in PDX. Folly, Jet and Portland Garment Factory all way in on what it takes to be Made in Portland.

At Red Light, we see design teams from across the country find inspiration in vintage – locally-based, independent fashion designers to corporate design teams (such as Forever 21) scout our racks
regularly – but we’ve never given much thought to the rest of the garment creation process. Not surprisingly, it’s pretty complex.

So, what do you think? Is Made in Portland worthy cause, or is Made in the U.S.A. good enough for you?

If you missed today’s event, don’t fret…We’re hosting $1 Sales all summer. Every second and fourth Sunday, June – August.

Vintage ’50s Glitter Glasses at Red Light’s Online Shop!

After many customer requests, we finally opened Red Light up to online shoppers!

We curate a mini-boutique full of unique pieces available online only, right from our website. The cyber-Red Light showcases men’s and women’s vintage clothing and accessories and often features some more rare or delicate items that previously would only have been available to private dealers.

One of the recently listed items we love: the ’50s glitter, cat eye glasses above are available now at Red Light online for just $32! Instant glamour and perfect for summer! These must have originally been worn by some Hollywood starlet, don’t you think?

Tips for Successful Selling @ Red Light

Many customers are surprised to find out that our inventory comes from people just like them, or you! Red Light actually buys most of our clothing directly from the public. Our Buying Counter is open everyday of the week, same hours as the shop itself. Hundreds of people every week sell us thousands of new items!

So, if you haven’t already sold to us, we hope you’ll try it – it’s easy and a great way to make quick cash, support your community (we’re independently owned – shop local, Portland!) and the environment (vintage is the only truly environmentally-friendly fashion).

Here’s a few tips to make your next Red Light selling trip a huge success:

1. Take clothes off of hangers. It’s actually easier for us to look through clothes NOT on hangers…you’ll save yourself and other sellers a lot of time by taking your items off of hangers before bringing them in to sell. Seriously – we go through items in a sack or suitcase twice as fast as items on hangers.

The same thing goes for plastic garment bags or dry cleaning bags. Unless the garment inside is fragile and needs protecting, those bags just get in the way. Please leave them at home.

2. Respect other customers by calling ahead if you have more than 100 items to sell. Don’t get us wrong – we love going through big buys! However, if you bring in hundreds of items when we already have a number of customers waiting to sell, it can turn into a frustrating wait for everyone. There are many times of the week when we can accommodate larger buys without slowing down the process for all other customers hoping to sell. Call ahead to 503-963-8888 and we’ll be happy to schedule a buying appointment at your convenience.

And if you forget to make an appointment, don’t worry! Just bring in some of the items you plan on selling and alert our Buyers on duty to your special situation. They’ll let you know how much time they need to look through your buy AND those of other customers…And you can always leave items and come back for your cash or credit later in the day!

3. Don’t pre-sort what you bring us based upon what you think we’ll like.
If you’ve gone to the trouble to bring in items to sell to us, go ahead and show us everything you want to get rid of! Our buying choices are determined by what Red Light needs and what our customers are asking for…so many sellers have been pleasantly surprised when we give them cash for items they thought we’d never want!

Red Light is the largest clothing exchange in the Northwest. We specialize in vintage, but we buy brand name clothing as well. We have the space and expertise to buy more than any other store in town – and we will, if you’ll let us! We want to give you $$$!

Betsey Johnson’s All The Rage!

There’s a strong ’70s influence in the look of spring/summer 2011 so it’s no real surprise that Betsey Johnson pieces are getting a lot of attention in our Hawthorne shop as well as online.

“But Betsey’s not a ’70s designer!,” you cry.

Well, yeah, but she was going strong in the early ’90s which, not coincidentally, also happened to be a big ’70s flashback moment. All flowy and floral, but with that punky punch of color which makes Betsey Johnson Betsey Johnson! Check it:

If you’re in Portland, we’ve got tons of vintage floral dresses for you – including more than a few Betsey pieces.

And if you’re anywhere else, or you just have your heart set on the dress above (which will look amazing with some granny boots and a giant sunhat!), you can buy it from our online shop:

Red Light’s Online Shop Now Open!

Yes, it took us awhile but The Red Light is now open online 24/7! You can shop Portland’s biggest vintage store from anywhere in the world!

We’re keeping Red Light’s online shop small for now…It’s not designed to replicate the experience of shopping in our physical store, but rather to give you a taste of what Red Light’s all about. So, of course, you’ll still find men’s and women’s vintage threads and accessories from a host of eras and at a range of prices.

New items go into the store every week and – as with all things vintage – when they’re gone, they’re gone! Right now we’re listing a bunch of vintage Betsey Johnson dresses as well as several really fabulous men’s polyester shirts…All signs point to the ’70s making a huge comeback this summer so snag some of these great period pieces while you can!
